My little bantam brahma mixed chicken 'Wichita' laid her first egg last night. The brahma rooster has been mating with two of the 9 hens for the past week. I have been keeping accurate records. She is 17 weeks old. So is the rooster. I bought them all as 3 day old chicks. Isn't that sort of young? Will she continue to grow in size while she is laying?
I wasn't quite expecting this so soon. She didn't use the egg boxes provided and instead walked around the yard making this agitated sound and kept going back into my flower beds. At one point she walked into the coop and was fussing and walked back out.
My egg boxes are 1.5 ft off the floor of the coop, mounted on the wall. So I put two on the floor of the coop with basil, fresh straw and green cut grass to entice her to lay there instead. Did I do the right thing? Oh, and I put a few fake eggs in the boxes... I don't know that she even realized she laid an egg or bothered to even look at it twice.
