I'm such a proud chicken Mama! Florence, my 24-week old Ancona laid her first egg today! Florence was a late addition to the flock, is a few weeks older than my other girls, and is the only white egg layer I have, so I know it's hers. I had calculated that she would begin laying on 9/29/18, so she was a day early. It's such a cute, perfect little pullet egg that I had to share.

Florence is most definitely an Ancona, but in comparing the photo to the actual egg it does look more brownish in the photo than IRL. She is about 4 weeks older than the next oldest (2 RI Reds), and they are getting close but I don't think it's either of them. In any event, Florence came to me at 8 weeks old and is still skittish about people, so I would have to corner and catch her to get close enough to check her vent, which is a bit traumatic for both of us. I feel confident enough that it's her egg that I don't think that's necessary, but this is really good info. to have so I know what to look for when the others get started. Thank you for sharing!

Taking pics of eggs on a white sheet of paper can help...
...but still it is hard to capture the RL color.
All cameras, and computer monitors, are different..it's like a game of 'telephone'.

I usually do exams off the roost at night, they are easier to 'catch'.

Oh happy day......I think the first one is so exciting.....

Hey, so here's a weird thing. After Florence laid her first egg that I collected on Friday morning, she laid a second one at about 8:30am on Saturday. Then nothing Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday. She was totally fine and nothing seemed at all amiss so I just tried to be patient (while checking the coop multiple times a day!) She built herself a nest in the corner of the coop by digging a shallow hole in the wood shavings and moving some of the straw from the nest boxes into it, and has been laying her eggs there. It's not an issue because it's just outside the nest box and not under the roost, and when I filled it back in (twice!) she dug it again, so she's determined. Anyway... when I turned everyone out at 7am today like I always do I checked for eggs like I always do and there was nothing. But when I got home from work at 4:30 this afternoon there were 2 eggs in the nest! They are identical in size, perfectly shaped, and snowy white. Florence is my only white egg maker (my other girls are 2 RI Reds, a Black Star, 2 Easter Eggers and a Dominique) so I sincerely doubt that it's from someone else, and it absolutely wasn't there this morning. Has anyone ever had a chicken lay 2 eggs in just under 9 hours?
