Well, the good news is that my 10 month old Welsummer hen laid her first two eggs today (yep, two!). The bad news is that they're very light brown. They're no darker than, say, your average Orpington egg. They do both have a some speckling, but the overall color is not even close to what you would hope for in Welsummer eggs. My understanding is that first eggs are usually **darker** than the others a hen will produce over time. So does this mean that my hen (who is gorgeous and sweet, and a great pet) is likely a dud as far as dark brown egg production goes? Sigh.

no, it doesnt mean that at all. when a hen first starts laying for the first time ever, they have to work the kinks out. what you are talking about is for the season. they start off dark and get a bit lighter. her body is just figuring out how it works for now. you will soon have dark eggs

@granny hatchet - Thanks for the input! Now I'm psyched; I was really shocked to see how light the eggs were. I love her no matter what color she lays, but I cannot deny that I am hoping for some beautiful, darker brown & speckled Welsummer eggs soon.
