My Sapphire Olive Eggers just started laying. Samwise just did this 😳. I thought it was just the super tiny one at first, but I nudged her over a little farther and found the slightly bigger one with it. I didn't think this was possible. I know that the first little while of laying, you can get some odd stuff, but this made me giggle. Has this happened to anyone else? Also, when do their eggs get to be a more normal size? I don't remeber if my first hens had mini eggs in the beginning. Second Pic is Frodo's egg from yesterday and Sam's 2 eggs from just now. They're about half or a little less than half the size of my older girls eggs.

Any hen can lay tiny eggs, it's just a little glitch in the production line. Her other eggs should be normal sized, maybe a little small because she's a pullet, but definitely bigger than the teeny one. I get tiny eggs once in a while from my younger hens, and it's always fun, because they're so cute.

Are you sure she laid both? Hens do like to sit on other eggs. I don’t believe it would be possible for her to lay both within a couple hours of each other, since they have fully formed shells. My guess is your other Sapphire OE snuck one of them in there.

Yes, she laid both. Only 2 of my newest are laying, and Frodo had already laid that morning. Then Sam went in and had those 2 under her. She had to have laid them at the same time too, not hours apart. It doesn't make sense to me either but I was out there.

It's uncommon, but sometimes a hen will release two yolks either back to back or simultaneously and that can result in two separate eggs instead of a double yolker. Or the first egg can get caught up somewhere in the reproductive tract until the second one comes along and both get laid at the same time.

Congratulations on the eggs! They're gorgeous!
