The 4 chickens we have are approx 5mos old...Barred Rock, Buff Orpington, Silverlaced Wyndotte, and Rhode Island Red....Not sure who is laying the eggs...got 4 so far..they are on the small side...I'm thinking they are young, that's why eggs are small?...eggs look good...thanks

Thank you...kinda was thinking that... be new at it wasn't sure...appreciate your response....we are happy to be getting the eggs..not sure who is laying...

check the vent. dry small cloaca = not laying. Large moist cloaca = laying.
3 or more fingers space between the pelvic bones = laying is imminent

That's normal! My girls have all given me pretty tiny eggs. Theyve been laying for maybe a little less than a month and their eggs are getting a lot bigger, fast. On the other hand though, ene of my white marans pullet's first egg was so large I thought it was the neighbor's chicken's because they have been laying for awhile, but she laid her second egg today in the nest box and it was also very large (and gorgeous!)

Here's a pic of my first ever eggs.

These are the eggs I've collected this week. The one on the middle is store bought. The one above it that is the same color is my white maran's first egg.

yep, my leghorn's first egg was small, the next was a little bigger, and each after is getting a little bigger in size. None of my other are laying yet, but I expect it to be about the same and will be surprised if it's not.
