I have a flock of 8 gals, 4 wyandottes 6 months old, and 2 Light Brahmas just under 6 months, and then a Buff Orpington and Rhode Island Red about 5 1/2 months. The first of the 8 to lay eggs was the Rhode Island Red, and she laid not just one but THREE eggs today! The first came in the morning, in one of the nest boxes where I had placed golf balls to encourage similar shaped items to appear, and all the girls were yakking so loudly about it all morning, they were SO excited! The yakking and honking went on for a few hours. Then, when straw fell out of the nest box onto the floor of the henhouse, the same hen laid two more eggs there, and began tending the nest and sitting on her warm eggs. I snuck the eggs out from under her and replaced them with golf balls. Then in the evening I had a 3 egg omlet. Yum! One other hen, a Wyandotte, was most interested and was also doing some "sitting" and going into the other nest box. Do you think she might be ready to lay pretty soon too?

Wow, that's so exciting!

Why did I have to get fancy and order a mixed batch that made hard order to fill!?

I think it's got to be great fun to have fancy chickens. I know someone who has a bantam silkie, and how gorgeous that beauty is! If I had given more thought to my flock before I bought them I'd have fancies too. I was very attracted to Silver Laced Wyandottes so I got 4 of them, but in retrospect I'd just get 1 or 2, and have a flock of 8 completely different breeds. Then it would really be fun, too, to see how the different breeds stack up in the pecking order and who socializes with who.

Congratulations!! I have 8 RIR's, too--7 are almost one year old, and 1 is almost 3 years old. Those lovely brown eggs just get bigger. I think I heard that they're prone to double-yokers. I know that I've had about 6 of those.

m I've been getting 3-6 eggs/day for the past few months, and this is inside the barn with only a 100 watt bulb on during the day. A couple of days, though, I got 7 eggs!

I think you have more than 1 hen laying! Its pretty rare for a chicken to lay more than 1 egg a day and 3 is quite a stretch;)

Somebody is sneaking around behind your back!

Congrats!
