My girls are 19 weeks old . My Red Comet started hunting around the yard on Sunday getting under things and looking hiding place. Sure enough the next day 2 eggs in the coop. (I am guessing she had some help because I thought they could only lay one egg a day?)

So here is my question. The girls cleaned out all the bedding from the nest box. Except for a few feathers the bottem is hard and bare. I didn't use straw, just pine shavings for bedding. Is it OK for them to do this? I would think the eggs are likely to break. Should I put straw or something else in there?

Lastly, is it OK to eat the first eggs? I am sure it is a dumb question, but the kids want to chow down!

Eat away!

As for the bedding, I just straw, so don't know about shavings staying in. That said, some also use fake grass turf on the bottom as they do like to make a nest and often dig to the bottom to do so.

Yeah you sure can eat them,Yummy.
As for the nesting boxes Maybe you should try straw instead of wood shavings.
Enjoy your first eggs and congratulations!!!!
