That usually means they're working on and egg. They'll sit down, look pale, and probably not eat, then lay about 1-2 hours later. But if the poops look foamy, it's probably worms.

No foamy poops... Thank goodness!

LittleOldLady, congrats on your first egg! Our production is just starting to pick up - and like you, it's our first time with chickens as well.

We have 8 Australorps and are getting 4 Buff Orpingtons and 4 Easter Eggers at the end of the month.

Chickens do do

a different poo about every 10-15th poo. As chicks this will be yellow and foamy, as adults it's more brown and not so much foamy as runny.

If you can catch your pullets then you can feel the distance between the pelvic bones (the 2 pointy bones either side of her vent). In a non-layer they will be pretty close together, a finger width or less. As a pullet gets into laying this gap will widen becoming upto 2 finger widths apart.

Some hens you get lucky with and can tell the eggs they lay.

That's wonderful! It was a big thrill, when my chickens laid their first egg. I also have trouble finding which bird laid which egg. I suppose, it really doesn't matter ,if you collect them frequently. It is just something nice to know.

Never tried this myself, but have heard of folks placing food coloring in the chicken's vent

, which then gets transferred onto the egg, so you can tell who laid it!

Yeah, no. I think I will enjoy the eggs regardless of who laid them.

My first egg ever! The chicken that laid this is a golden comet and she is 17 weeks and 1 day old. I have 27 other chickens of all different breeds, hopefully i'll have enough eggs to have a big breakfast this weekend while camping.
