first eggs!

I ran out after work yesterday and purchased a nesting box, and some layer feed for the hens. I read somewhere on here that you need to wait a few days/egg lays after putting the hens on layer feed before you should eat the eggs. I think it had something to do with the vitamins that are added to the feed for young chicks. Also, what type of materail do you all put in your nesting boxes? I have read that you should not use straw because of mites or cedar shavings because it is bad for the chickens. I am kinda bummed now because I had left over cedar shavings that I put in the nesting box.

and just an update.. No new eggs yesterday, so I am hoping to see one or two more when I get home from work today

I've always heard that cedar shavings are not recommended becaused of the strong fumes (repels moths) they give off are not good for their respiratory systems. Use pine shavings. You can get them at TSC.

wow thats AWSOME! i got mine on march 27 at IFA so im still waiting although you hens started laying in a random place i believe (from what i have learned on BYC) if you place some golf balls or fake eggs in the nest box you purchase then they will notice them and lay another next to them after you notice that theyve laid then remove the golf balls i think that should work good luck! and CONGRATZ!!

Congrat on your first eggs. I too got my first eggs today. I bought the pullet knowing that she "should be laying in the next couple of weeks" and sure enough, 2 1/2 weeks after I got her, Snowy gave me these:

There is a slight bluish tint to them and I found them on the floor. Then Snowy was sitting and moving bedding around where I found one of the eggs and sure enough when I went out again an hour later, there was another one. The two above the ruler are the found ones (they would have been laid Monday and Tuesday), and the one below is the one that was still warm and laid Wednesday. Isn't it amazing how small they are? I'm thinking about blowing the contents out so I can keep the shell of the first couple of eggs. To try and get Snowy to lay tomorrow's egg in the nest box, I'm going to block off where she's been laying, and I've put a plastic egg in each nest box. Youngest son tells me that she's already checked it out so hopefully it'll work.

First egg today.. I went out and checked there water about 9am and it was not there. Went out about 2pm to turn them out and found a egg under the steps going into the coop. It must be from one of the Ameraucanas which I figured would be last. It was pretty small of course. However it was as hard as store bought.
