Hope this is the right place to put this.
My GF has no internet @ the house where the chickens are or she would post. Her 7 mos. RIR's are starting to lay! She called me on the phone, I was in Az. (see profile) she was giddy as a school girl. Her dream is starting to come true. The eggs were a bit small but not malformed.
She said the hens that were ready to lay acted kinda funny, separated themselves (free range) from the other 3 a bit and scratched around assumingly to make a nest while free ranging. She put that one in the coop, awhile later,BINGO, egg. She hastily made some nesting boxes from some plastic totes but the girls seemed to ingnore them and scratched a small nest in the floor of the coop and layed their eggs. As a newbie, this is a milestone after the predatory losses. I'm sure it sounds corny, but the joy in her voice was epic. ? Will the hens adapt to the boxes? I've read (here) that they'll recognize the boxes eventually and use them to lay. GF says the girls like some privacy while in the "process", your thoughts?
Thanks to everyone on the forum, especially the veterans. Your tolerace to us newbies is greatly appreciated.

Congrats! Put fake eggs in the nest to show them where they go. Worked like a charm on my girls. Good luck!
