Greetings;

So finally got our ladies a week ago. A Sussex Light Sussex born in July, a black Ameraucana, and a Orpington Buff both born in august. The coop is well insulated, but with adequate ventilation. No heat lamp, just 2 standard 50w lights on from 8am to 8pm. So far so good, during the day temp inside the coop is around 57f, while it was 32f ouside. When the sun goes down, the outside temp dropped to 28F but the coop was at a nice and cosy 46f.

I think I can relax and stop worrying about them. ! My wife keeps telling me I am turning in a "Father hen", don't know the English equivalent of "père poule" other then dotted father.

We are ready for winter.

Congratulations on your new arrivals! Your "Buff Orpington" looks more like some sort of bantam to me. I really wouldn't worry about heat this early, but if it makes you happy...

Not suppose to be Bantam, the hatchery I got them from only raises on kind of bantam, Hambourgs. She is same size then the Ameraucana. They are small then our Light Sussex but she is a month older then them, maybe that's why.

Anyways, we are flipping out over them :-P

Don't worry about your chickens needing to be cozy. Chickens prefer cooler temperatures and are very winter hardy. Don't coddle them too much, they don't feel the weather the same as we do. I do understand worrying, but they will be okay.
