Hey all, I am a long time reader first time poster to the BYC. After recently graduating college and getting married my wife and I found a humble plot in Kansas City, Kanas a stones throw away from Legends/Speedway where we get, for the most part, the best of both worlds. With a couple acres and easy going neighbors we have been able to rear chickens for the first time with little trouble. We started with our first batch of chicks at beginning of this year and have recently been enjoying the first round of eggs. We've been able to free range for all of the day but have to make sure the pins are locked up at night as we're in a high predator area... an on going battle as always. As always this has been a learning experience for a minimalist husband and a city-girl wife. My wife has atleast claimed the silkies as her own... which is a start.

We're now about to begin on out 3rd batch of chicks. We were hoping to get enough hens in our second batch to begin breeding them but ended up with 12 out of 26 being roosters spread across 6 breeds (RIR, Jerseys, Cochin, Japanese, Silkies, Orpingtons). After selling our extra roosters and nature taking its course we are down to 3 RIR with a rooster, 4 Jersey with a rooster, and 1 Cochin in our main run and 4 Japanese with two roosters in our garden run.

Chickens have become my new hobby along with micro-farming. My wife and I are trying to reclaim our families heritage of farming two generations ago but on a more self sufficient, small operation and chickens along with gardening were our first step but we have a long way to go.

Along with chickens we are hoping to breed children, goldendoodles, and possibly ducks in the near future. But as for now we are content with each other, our 12 chickens, and our goldendoodle named Jasmine. Let me know if there are any Chicken people around the KCK area. Take care all.

Welcome. You'll find just about all the info you need here or at minimum a fellow micro farmer's answers :) sounds like a great plan! It's what we want to do in the future! Keep at it even if it gets frustrating on occassion ;)
Were planting food gardens, fruit trees, long term crops and re designing a chicken run (no one warned me about chicken math when I rescued a pair of pullets thinking a few eggs a week n funny antics were enough to squelch a chickies addiction lol dang it) take and post pics of projects you do and your flocks to share. Tons of info here has help me tweak things here and there thanks to others great ideas they share :) Good luck on finding your roots!
