Hi! I was given 3 silkie eggs from a friend to hatch. I really wanted to try and hatch some chicks myself so the kids and I could see how amazing it is. I have had trouble with this awful incubator I found on amazon but up until now... day 18 the eggs were looking to progress well. I believe I lost a chick as there are no more veins in the egg and it has not grown much since yesterday. : ( My second egg has movement but there is a what looks like a clot at the end of one of the veins. It is worrisome looking. My third egg is great and I am now going to put them in lockdown and hope for the best. I am wondering if the blood clot thing is normal and also...if I only hatch one chick will he/she be ok? I have been searching for baby chicks so this chick wont be alone. My friend has no more chicks or hens. --very worried. Thanks for any info.

Lack of viening is a signifier of death, but if there is no odor I would certainly put it into lockdown with the rest. "Blood clot" -it's hard to advise or give opinions w/o a visual. I would say as long as it's moving and the veins are good and they are developed to where they should be, I wouldn't be overly concerned. (But like I said, w/o a visual

If you do have a single hatcher your best bet would be to find it a couple friends if at all possible. An only chick can be a very loud and demanding chick. My very first ever chick was an only survivor and hatched late fall when no one has chicks. He was not happy unless he was out with us. Then he was as good as gold. Made for a very spoiled little boy...lol Especially at night when he had no choice to be in his cage. (He wintered inside with us of course.) Took him a couple hours after lights off before he would totally shut down and go to sleep...lol It can be done, but it's not easy on chick or human... Sometimes adding a small mirror and/or a stuffed animal to the cage/pen can help. (Not in our case though.)

that both hatch!

Well, things are not looking good. It is now day 23 and I have lost another egg. I have had my temp to low it seems. I followed the directions on this awful incubator and did not do enough research. I have candled my last egg and there is movement. Good lively movement but I can still see veins near the air cell working away. She seems way to small for this late day due to my low temps. I guess now I will keep the egg in there and hope for the best.
