First incubation attempt a bust

I have officially given up on this batch. I was out running errands today and spent 4 hours at the laundromat and when i finally got back to my moms house my incubator has been unplugged. We are still without power so i'm just gonna wait until we get it back to try round two. I haven't seen a utility truck around here at all yet so that might be awhile. And plus even with all the extra efforts, I still didn't ever get the temp to stay up. Thanks anyway Fudgie. If at first you don't succeed.........

why not?

I speak only for myself, but with a hiney the size of mine that would take a LOT of feathers.

Wednesday began attempt "B". I set 22, I think, more of my own mutts. Is it normal for the incubator to have to be readusted after the eggs have been put in? I waited several hours for the eggs to get up to temp but still had to adjust it. As of this morning it was ok (98.8 - 100.0) with 45% humidity.

What i usually do before setting a new batch, I put in a few water bottles to give the incubator the "appearance" of having eggs in there, when the temp gets regulated, swap the bottles for the eggs. let it get back up to temp and you should not have to adjust. Once I have mine set, they run nonstop (my name is FUDGIE and I am a hatchaholic) ok now that we have that out of the way....anyway. you should not have to readjust over and over again.

ever since i got it adjusted after putting the eggs in it seems to be holding well. btw, after i gave upon my first hatch i started cracking them open and i had candeled on day 3 and marked the ones that i thought were doing good and sure enough, all of the ones i thought were good had development. i had 8 out of 12 that were good so hopefully the eggs i send out to you (Fudgie) next week for FFA will have the same or better fertility rate.

The ones you gave up on what "day" did they look like? Did they keep developing after the power went off? We live in the sticks and loose power during storms so I'm sure I'll go through this eventually...

The first three days of incubation was all regulated right. From day 4 to when i cracked them on day 7 they were unregulated. Days 4-6 i couldnt get the temp above 92. Part of day 6 and all of day 7 the bator was totally unplugged sitting in a garage. The embryo was about 1/4" with a big eye. I thought about keeping them in just to see what happened but then i got worried that they would come out disfigured and i didn't want to have to deal with that.

When I get involved with something I'm totally engulfed. I ordered 8 americana eggs. Probably not the smartest thing since I've actually never hatched chickens. but I did breed snakes for years and had a hovabator for those and always did well.
