A week ago I started to let my chicks stay in their new coop. The other day while they were roaming around I heard Pearl chirp excitedly because she had found a big june bug. She was trying to run away from the other girls who wanted to share! It took a while but Pearl got to eat her bug. Two days ago the girls met their first large grasshopper. As they went after it the thing jumped in the air and landed right in front of them. They screamed, ran into each other then ran away from it. Chicks are too cute at this age (2months), but I don't think they are gonna go after the big bugs for some time.

Oh, I love it, can't wait till mine are big enough to roam around and find their bug treasures! Thanks fir sharing! I have a feeling we will be following ours around the yard just for fun for days.

Question - how many weeks were they when they went into the coop - 2 months you mention, was that 8 weeks or 2 full months? and where are you located (wondering about weather/temp and when mine will get to the coop)

Thanks!

It was at two months. My reason was because they outgrew the brooder in the house. I was afraid I was gonna wake up one day and find three little chickens crammed in that cage! They grow soo fast!! I live in Texas and we have sporadic weather here but I keep a heat lamp ready just in case. They seem pretty comfortable with 60 degree nights. The chicks will let you know. If they are huddled together - more heat, apart - less. They are quite vocal. Lol
