First lockdown-question

Today is day 21 and of the 4/5 eggs are in various stages of showing signs of hatching. Our first pip was 23 hours ago, the most recent about an hour ago. Here is a picture of the 23 hour chick. It has made quite a bit of progress this morning. Only question I have is should I consider this zipping? It is slowly making progress but I've read so many places that zipping is quick-under an hour. I have no intentions of intervening on my first hatch. Does this look good?

As long as beak is visible and moving so you know it can breathe, just be patient and observant(like you could look away...haha!).
That is a side pip(external pip not thru air cell)they can take longer to get out,
but may not be able to turn for a true zip.
When to intervene is tricky and a personal decision...

I do not place a sponge in water. We wet ours, ring it out, then take a piece of aquarium tubing, lay on top of sponge and syringe the water to sponge to avoid bacteria and opening incubator. Again, using distilled water.

23 hr chick: this chick has been unable to “unzip” all the way around the shell. This means he has little fluid left to help him. If not out in 4 hrs, I would assist. Just remove top part of the egg shell where it started or wait and see if it can do it on its own but I would not. Or, create the zip line for it to see if it can push its self out. At 23 hrs, he could be taking a break since he apparently can’t move around and he tired. I would remove just the top end of Rounded bottom of shell and get his head out and see if he will finish. He may have a large yolk sac so don’t remove any other shell unless he is getting weaker.

I haven't because I was dead set against doing it on my first hatch, outcome be what it may. That said, now that I can see it cheeping and moving around the decision will be more difficult. It is still moving and making progress so I want to give it a fair shot on its own. Of course the one that pipped this morning looks like it isn't going to take very long. Making a good deal of progress 2 hours after the pip. I just peeked back in and the 23 hour one continues to progress and almost looks zippy to me....

Good to browse thru the assisting info, it'll help you decide if the time comes.
If it does come you won't want to have to wade thru all that info then.

They're both out! One took almost 24 hours, the other less than 2. There are 3 eggs still in there, 2 with pips. Oh my gosh, I could see how this could be intoxicatingly addictive. Pretty happy with these results so far. I bought 7 eggs on Ebay, 6 were fertile at 7 days. If we manage to get 4 or 5 out of 6 fertile eggs I will be over the moon.

Upon closer inspection, I think the 24 hour chick may have a problem as it appears to be stuck on its back. It will furiously wriggle trying to get flipped over but no success yet. Do I flip it or give it awhile? Humidity is 73% and I have 2 pipped eggs in there. Little big of wiggle room I would think if I can do it quickly. Thoughts?

Did it get up on it's own?
They are pretty 'drunken sailor' for the first hour or two..

No, I flipped it after the 3rd chick hatched and took advantage of the extra humidity. It's been good ever since.
