I lost my lovely Coco today to a hawk while my girls were having supervised free-range time. I was ten feet away and the flock was digging through dried leaves in a stand of pine trees. There was good cover, nearby birds were chirping, there was no warning. I couldn't scare the hawk off, it wasn't worried about me and my yelling AT ALL. The rest of the chickens scattered, it took me an hour and a half to find the last one.
I know this is the risk of giving them freedom. I know Coco's death was swift and the hawk needs to eat, too. And I know that predators always take your favorite.
But still ....
