So tonight I traded a woman four red golden chicks for a 2 year old india blue. He is my first and only peacock (so far) How long should I keep him penned before letting him free range. Was not prepared for him so he is in with my silver pheasants for the night til I can put up the divider between two pens.

Well you should have seperated him for 30 days for biosecurity purposes, but it doesnt sound like you really had a choice.

I would leave him in there for a couple days, so he realizes it is home.

Good Luck!! Ive always wanted a peacock.

Id keep him penned for a few months.... give him time to "bond" with the other birds in his pen. (a peahen would be ideal) And get familiar with his surroundings. Then when you do let him out, only do it for an hour at a time for a few weeks until he gets used to staying home. Gradually increase his time out from 1 hour to full time.
Its the same as if you brought home a new dog... or any other animal. You cant just bring it home and turn it loose expecting it to know where home is.
