First Month Mistakes

My first foray into chick raising wasn't too bad (I learned about the nipple drinker from a YouTuber and I will never use anything else)... I would NOT use the soft nylon zip top container and would use a metal tub instead. I would also find a way to brood them OUTSIDE from at least week two. The dust, even in the garage, was maddening. Mine are thriving outside at 5 week, in the coup. So I definitely will never get chicks before Pascha (late April, early May).

Ah, I cut a hole In the tub lid and duck taped chicken wire to the top… then put the lid on. It ain’t pretty but it keeps them in.

Looking back (4 years ago), I was a such a NEWBIE! Basically had no idea what I was doing with my first 6 chicks. Luckily I had recently joined BYC and knew enough to take care of them properly.

Biggest mistake: Kept them in the basement with heat until they were 12 weeks old! Had a HUGE pen set up and there was dust e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e.
