I'm two weeks out on finishing my new coop. I was going to order buffs in two weeks if they didn't show up at the Tractor Supply store.
I stopped by TSC to see if they had any buff orpingtons in. I didn't get by last week. The girl said they got buff poulets in last Wednesday and a guy bought all 30 of them. She had bunch of ISA Browns, road island reds, Wyandottes… and her manager just left the store to go to the post office to pick up three boxes of chicks. They never know what they are getting.
I ran and picked up an Rx refill to kill some time and when i got back she was just cutting the boxes open. The first box was full of black chicks. The second box was full of golden buff orp chicks. I ran home to get ready. I have my small box bin and light and nothing else so i went back and started shopping.
I need to find a small feeder and waterer tomorrow. They were sold out of so much starter stuff. I bought food, pine shavings, cat food cans, 4 ISA Brown and 4 Buff Orpingtons. The ISA's have a few days on the buffs. I'm hoping to find two spotted sussex when i check the other TSC store in the A.M. First week will be in my room. I'll make a bigger box and put them in the garage for a few weeks. We are 92°-82° so they should do fine. They seem to like to perch on the rim of the cat food cans and drink. It will do fine for a few now.

Looks like a good start.

With your temps so high, and then also the heat lamp... do try to increase the size of the brooder if you can,so they can cool off if they need to.

Watch the temp.... just seeing if they are comfortable works...you don't need a thermometer.

Congratulations! Talk about good timing!

I agree with what both posters said above. With my first flock, I checked temps religiously. I didn't need to, really. They will huddle together if they're cold or get as far away from your heat source if they're hot. Just make sure they are all running around and happy.

After a few days, I switched to a DIY mama heating pad, and it made everything easier! No 24/7 light on in my house, no thermometers, no fume/fire concerns, and - better still - no pasty butt!

Goid luck with your new flock! I love my BO. Great all-around chicken.
