Well, my mom renamed Woolly Bully who is now Shrek.
I teased her and said that it now means Shrek is her chicken cause she called the official name. Also told her it would be funny if Shrek turned out to be a girl.
Shrek was lonely for pretty much all of his first day; however, this was to be short lived as Rita begain her new journey by zipping out Saturday evening (day 23).
Not to be out done, Lola decided that she too wanted out; however, she zipped while we were all tucked in bed.
Here are Rita and Lola on Sunday morning (day 24).
Here are the babies all together in the order from left to right: Rita, Shrek, & Lola
Your probably wondering why Woolly Bully became Shrek. He was so cuddly when he was by himself. But, when Rita and Lola came to stay they were very fussing and kept bumping into him. Shrek began showing some ogre like traits as he started moving away and tried to hog all the yummy food to himself. Rita soon discovered this bossy big chick had something very good and went to check it out. She got a few bites in before Shrek realized she was making a move on his food. He then tried to body block and was making the I got something good chirps as though he thoroughly enjoyed playing keep away with the food. However, Rita showed her fighting spirit and pushed him back. The race to see who could gobble the most was now on! Lola was a bit timid over the competion and would sneak in a few bites while the other too had their contest. Afterward the 3 chicks crashed for a good nap. For the rest of the day Rita and Lola followed Shrek about immitating everything he did which he acted annoyed, but at the same time enjoyed the attention.
Rita's start was a bit rough as she had a hard time getting out of the egg. When she hatched I noticed a small sack hanging off of her that looked like it could have been her yoke sac? She was very uncoordinated and could not quite get good footing on the wire. She then climbed onto the sponges and discovered she could move about much better. Unfortunately, she had more goo on her that dried hard and not fluffy. I had to bathe the poor girl in warm water to get it off. I have never done this before so was a bit concerned and as gentle as possible. I then held her in a towel and made hen clucks at her to keep her calm. When I took her out to bathe the sac dried up and was stuck to her side. Her tummy looked normal.
In the meantime, Lola who hatched while we were asleep was moving around very well in the bator. She seemed stronger. I took the girls out at the same time to put them with lonely Shrek. Lola is a partridge silkie whereas Shrek and Rita are blue silkies. Lola is a bit shy, but she is the youngest and sharing space with Shrek the bigger chic (loves to eat) and fiesty Rita who has shown that she has a fighting spirit.
I really hope these 3 grow up strong and healthy. I do not know who is really a boy or girl but the names help us tell them apart when talking about them.
The other 5 eggs have not pipped yet at all. I took them out and did the water test and they still appear to be viable. I seen a couple move a small bit but am unsure if anymore will actually hatch as today is day 24. The chances for these late babies is slim but as long as there is movement there is hope.
