First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

I am back!!!!

Let me think of all I read, It was pages and pages.

JR I would raise the CX's separate from the others. The CX will eat too much if allowed to eat all the time. Holms had a good idea put the food inside a 12 inch wall, the CX's will never be able to jump it. Then feed the CX's twice a day for 15-20 minutes.

MM I have lost birds at 2 months to raptors. I lost a full grown hen, but I think that was to an Eagle and the hen was defending the babies. I worry about mine still, I make my 2 month olds go into the brooder tractor every night. They do not like it They want to roost outside.

Did I mention I ordered my CX's I have 70 coming, they will be shipped on the 8th.

Well so far I've not lost birds but cats. One of the 3 missing cats came home yesterday. She has been gone about 2 weeks. She has lost about 5 lbs and has scars on her belly, back and head. Mostly healed and not infected. We still have no idea what got her. She is very weak. I'm keeping her inside till she is well.

I'm back too. We have been melting from the heat around here pushing 100s most days. I swear that I should be at least 30 pounds lighter but of course, it never works that way. My poor birds. With the trees now cut along the back fence line, we have had to put a trailer, a pick up, one of those pop up tents and whatever we can find to give these girls some shade. They are so much happier come 8:30ish when the temps come down.

You probably are wondering what we have been up to? I adopted a new EE. Her name is Cinnamon. She is about 4 months old and laid her first egg the same week that I got her. A lovely light blue egg. Normally, I wouldn't have put her with my flock right away but I got her from a little girl that does 4H and she had just had her health check through them. The girl couldn't show her because a dog had attacked her about 2 months ago. When she recovered, her feathers grew back kind of upside down and funky on her neck where the wound was. I think she's perfect!

She is very smart too. The very first night I had her she scoped out the main coop and went inside before everyone else. She is younger than everyone else in my flock but she seems to get on fine. I have an escapee hen from my layer pen that has been staying up by the house all of the time. Since she and Cinnamon are the same age, they seem to be friendly with each other.

She is a bit of a stinker too. She is the first one of my hens to ever fly up onto the top of the coop.

The other thing going is our second chicken tractor is well under way. Good thing too because these girls really need to get moved to pasture! I believe 25-30 of them are laying now. I can't wait until their eggs are all normal size.

MM I wouldn't leave them out. I lost my full grown Blue slate hen to an owl. And it was a Barred owl. Not even as big as a Great horned owl.
