First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

Do you know if there's a difference? I was told by some breeders that hatchery giants don't get any larger then your average rir or leghorn but I'm not entirely sure if they were just selling me or warning

Hatcheries breed for quantity. Not saying you won't get great examples of breed types,it's just there is big difference once you start looking,SOP,utility breeders ,and hatcheries all have a different goal.

I think alot of the ones complaining about hatchery stock size are expecting the birds to be SOP. Im ALLREADY seeing differences in size and confirmation of my different breeds at 4 weeks. Buy more than you want or need then cull hard.

So far Ive used Metzer for geese
Mcmurray for White giants, jumbo cx,dark cornish and white rocks
Ideal for white cochins.
I don't have one negative thing to say about any of them.
You have to have in mind what the most important characteristics are. I couldn't justify the cash outlay for SOP birds just to make Heinz 57's out of. I wanted birds that when mature reach at least 10# ( except rocks) have white feathers and yellow skin.

I was wondering, a lot of the same things so I will be following this closely. I have also run into close minded people on the subject. When I first found out My leghorns might be CX. I was upset. But then I started to love them. I was secretly hoping that one of the 4 girls was a boy. But it didn't work out that way. I was wondering if I could get a self sustaining flock of CX. Would they always be at risk of heart and leg problems. Or would that reduce with each generation? But my experiment is on hold for now. The only rooster I have is a Silkie. Who started to crow this morning. He has had 2 episodes today. I call them episodes. He just looks like he is struggling to get it out. He sticks out his neck, flaps his wings, then the sound he makes doesn't sound like as my rooster I've heard before. My DH, and I just started laughing when he started this morning. It really looks like he is having an attack of crowing. And can't stop till he has done it 5 times. It was so funny to watch.
JR the other day I was asking if a Silkie roo was capable of mating with a CX. And if it is possible what should I expect. I think it was you that responded wondering about the possibilities, but no one ever said if he could or not. He has gotten pushy lately and sometimes bites the girls on the neck and just hangs on for a minute. But I'm thinking he's dreaming. But the girls submit and don't fight back. I'm assuming this is all normal stuff they do.

I have no doubt your silkie could do the job.

A person that does not get a huge grin and smile over a teenage rooster crowing lacks a sense of humor.
