First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

This thread is one of maybe 5that I follow on different breeds and topics. It is IMO one of the best. The people here are nice and very helpful. You don't get called out when you stray off topic. Sometimes we get out there in our conversations,to me it makes them more personable. All day I've been wondering how Ralph has made out. Not looking for information on weights and feed conversion. Im wondering how a person, one of many here that Ive grown fond of is doing. If you are sitting quietly on the sidelines, reading the threads, Don't hesitate to chime in.These are great people with different experiences, that come together to talk about a common intrest . On some of the threads you would think we were discussing politics or religion. People get plumb onery if you voice a different viewpoint or get off topic. They don't do that here.
Like I said,I hope Ralph found some flipflops that suit him. I hope things weren't too stressful. And I hope the rest if you have had a great day:)

Agree - and I haven't raised ANY CXs. Still feel at home here.

Regarding flipflops - I have Crocs flip flops (comfy, good shoes). But I was just in the tractor to clean out the bucket waterer - and the chicks swarmed my toes with their sharp little beaks and poopy feet - OW! I suppose they must look like grubs. Fat grubs, I guess (no comment). Anyhow, my toes are sore and slightly poopy - I think I'll use clogs from now on when I actually go IN with the little ones.

What kind of Heathen are you?

Unless you are a double amputee there is no excuse or reason to not wear flip flops!

Maybe you should think of sitting next to me at the bar, I could console you on your complete lack of style,

One legged guy comes hopping in with one flip flop, reaches the stairs goes to step up one flip flop gets caught on the stair and down he goes and it's all your fault amputees of any kind would have issues wearing flip flops it's in the name must have two to work lol

With or without flip-flops, 60 birds over 2 days is a lot of work, Ralphie. Glad you got it done and see have 6 meatballs running around to enjoy.

My one runty CX is still just about the same and I'm a bit mystified and torn about what to do. I'm now thinking there is something developmentally wrong with it, rather than an illness. I examined it again closely yesterday. It is about 1/2 the size of the others, but it's legs are 1/4 the size and thickness. They are tiny, spindly things. It's body temperature is very cold for a CX and it almost looked blue under the wings. I dribbled some sugar water into its beak yesterday and than plunked it down under a heat lamp with mash and crushed meal worms placed right in front of it. It didn't seem to change anything.

It can still walk well enough, and seems to be drinking normally, but just has no energy and is eating very little. The condition has been pretty much the same for the last few days. At times it will perk up a bit and move around or peck the ground, but most of the time is just sits or stands in the corner, sometimes with its eyes shut. It's wings are bit droopy. It's poo is mostly liquid but normal in color. No wheezing, sneezing or discharge. I could see no evidence of parasite. The rest of the flock is bursting with energy. They are roosting in the bushes, the roosters are bumping chests and they are the healthiest looking and most lively batch I have had thus far.

After a day in the hospital, and seeing no overt signs of illness, I put it with the rest last night. She/he went out into the yard with the flock this morning on its own volition. I'm trying to decide whether to cull it as it's quality of life seems so much less than the rest, or just let it live with the flock for a couple more days to see what will happen. I kind of doubt it's ever going to get big enough to process.

Thoughts?

my completely uncalled for advice would be to remove it from the rest, incase it is harboring some virus or bacteria within it's body that is just strengthening and waiting to get free and infect the others.

Is it the breed or a different breed? Sometimes the packing peanuts are not the same breed, just happen to be what they have around.

I think I would turn that one into a house bird. bathtubs are great places to raise birds. At least until you are sure it is not going to spread something to the rest.

I am a softy and hardly ever cull, but you sound able to do that, I separate and try to get them to live.

Morrigan - I had a runt in my last batch of cx. She was super active and healthy until one day when she just wasn't anymore. I don't know if you remember from last year but she was the one that I said looked like she was eating, like making the motion of it, but she wasn't actually touching the food. I had to get way down at her level to see it and it was weird! She did wind up just dying. If she looks bluish, I wonder if she has a lung or heart defect. You could cull or just let nature take it's course. You never know what could happen.
