First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

Is there a hump in his back?  Have you let him try to cover a hen?

That hump is his hips. His breast is so heavy his front end is weighted down and his butt is in the air causing a humped appearance. Watch out for green muscle in a breast that large. Deep pectoral myopathy (DPM) is a degenerative muscle disease of heavy chickens and turkeys commonly referred to as 'Green Muscle Disease'.

Cockerels have to be able to pull up their chest to jump up. I believe he will be an AI candidate as long as the excitement does not cause aortic dissection.

I think he can safely mate with hens without running a risk of a heart attack, however, as a precaution I would only mate him to the ugly hens so he does not get too worked up over them.

I will try the natural route, but I believe he is just too big. Then again,we once had a Doberman mate with a poodle. Talk about UGLY. Linda I do worry about the muscle death,at this point though there isn't much to be done. As far as heart attacks go If he was going to have one he missed an excellent opportunity when one of my True Blue Whiting Roosters snuck into the cage during feeding time. I mistakenly thought he was too big to defend himself. Boy was I wrong. He trounced the whiting in short order
