First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

As soon as thecool weather gets here I'm. Sending 100 to camp
I just sent 25 to camp. Then again I'm up north so it's already getting cool. I'd say drop your extra flock members off here but they wouldn't handle my weather. I'm always looking for more birds.

Oh no!! Did I just admit to being completely insane? Shhhh don't tell my psychologist, she will increase my meds.

Actually, coturnix quail. Don't need as much space and can make more money off of them. But I enjoy learning

It's the curiosity that gets you! :gig I was curious and was directed here by friends on another thread just a few weeks ago. Now I've added a chicken tractor and 27 CXs to my flock. We're in week five already. You're hooked you just don't know it yet! ;)

Lol, I only have 10 acres at my farm and 6 horses.... not enough grazing space for what I have, I can't have birds damaging grazing area or pooping all over it so the horses won't eat there. The quail will be in wire racks in a small building, so they won't seriously impact the grazing area. If I get down to 4 horses, maybe, then I'll have 2 acres to "spare"

Ralph, you tried out the plucker yet?

I did..

It is amazing. My son in law and I did 20 birds in 90 minutes. It takes about 10 seconds to take all the feathers off.

There would be a few feathers just above the legs and the back of the wings. (the secondaries). It took just a second or two to remove them. The pin feathers were even gone.

We learned on the longer lanky birds we had to chop the feet and bottom leg off before plucking.

You've got seven more acres than I have but I don't have horses, just a few chickens, lol. They do poop a lot and the strip behind the tractor is unusable for a while but I've seen how well the grass improves afterwards from the "tilling" and "fertilizing." I only have space for one small tractor and I move it twice a day just to keep the birds cleaner and fresh grass under them. They also get to "free range" a little every day.

Processed the last 2 Sasso Farm Ranger cockerels today.
Was going to keep them for a X large bird but they weren't looking good on their legs so in the freezer they went.
They were 5 lb dressed at 16 weeks old, I'm happy with that although as a bird I don't like them as much as the Sasso Gallic.

These are the last to be processed this year.
The hens have been kept back for breeding and are laying well.
I will be keeping the whole batch of Cornish to mature before making any decisions on stud cockerels.
