First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

What are the best breeds for game hens?
Cross CX with Dark Cornish. They look like mature birds at every stage.

Just some of today's pictures of my project birds for 2017. The oldest Dark Cornish are 16-17 weeks. The Oldest White CX/Cornish are 14 weeks. I have whittled the whites down to two cockerels and six pullets. I still have quite a few Dark Cornish to select. The More SOP Dark Cornish pullets have the clear pencil pattern like the one just below. The Dark Cornish pullets I am keeping for crossbreeding have a better body, but a muddy pencil pattern.

Just lost my Project Sasso Rooster I kept back for breeding!!!!
Think it was his heart.

I'm so pleased I changed my mind and gave in to keeping a back up.
After the death of my first two cockerels back to back when I first started back into chickens, I save a group of two to four until they start breeding. After you find out who is interested in breeding, who can settle eggs, then who is going to stay around. Sometimes the cockerel just does not nick or produce good looking chicks. I am sorry to hear about your Sasso Rooster. Lesson well learned.
