First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

Ralphie - They were hardboiled egg yolks. For 25, I was giving them about a cup of yogurt and 4 egg yolks each night for 5 days. It would be gone in about three minutes. The first day I mixed it with their crumbles because they looked at me like I had three eyes when I first set it down in front of them. Once they realized how amazing it was, I didn't add any crumbles (and had to get my hand out of there fast!).

As a bonus, when one of them gets ahold of a chunk of egg yolk, you get the entertainment of watching them sprint around the brooder trying to keep it for themselves!

My neighbor called and said she found some baby chicks in the road all alone. She said she couldn't keep them and would I? Well who can say no to cuteness?? These little abandoned babies couldn't have been more than 1-2 days old. It made me so sad that someone left them. If you may know what breed they are, feel free to let me know or just enjoy the cute!

These two are EE, right?



These two are Barred Rock I think. They have barring on their wings starting and they look exactly like what mine looked like.



This one is obviously a mix. It has feathered legs.



These two I don't have a clue. The one on the right has some brown on it's head.

The neighbor also said that the people that live behind them have a ton of chickens and they don't take care for them or their other livestock. They have even been turned in to animal control for the condition their horses are in. She asked them if the chicks were theirs and they said no and they didn't want them. They have enough chickens.

Therefore, I suspect they hatched there and they don't want them. I guess that explains the kind of people that would do this. People that are irresponsible and have no respect for an animal's life. I couldn't leave them to die especially once I saw the tiny little guys.

Just didn't have the nerve to cull them. If you can't give them away and don't have room for them, unfortunately it is a decision that all chicken keepers that live sustainably have to make. I had to cull a deformed chick and it wasn't fun. But it couldn't live with no eyes.

Awww, they're so cute! Someone had to have left them out there like that since they're an assortment of different breeds. I'm too much of a newbie to help you on the breeds, though. Some people make me so mad! Last year, someone threw a bag of trash in my driveway. When I went out to clean it up, I found two 3-week-old kittens in there. Of course, like you, I couldn't say no to cuteness, so now I have two 1-year-old cats. Your chicks are lucky they found a good home!

I'm happy that I am able to give them a good home too. My hubby only mentioned the term animal hoarding lightly. Haha! However, he loves all of the chickens too, so I'm not the only crazy around here.

Holm: Good call! This one does look like a Black Copper Maran! If so, I will take it. If not, I will still take it! I'm not familiar enough with all of the chicken breeds to come up with that on my own. Thank you!

I did do my random weight today. Roos were almost at 5 pounds and hens were closer to 4 pounds. I think we will definitely be going to 9 weeks with these guys. It would help my hubby out too since he has to have surgery for a pretty nasty hernia as soon as these guys turn 8 weeks. Since my goal is 5 pounds dressed birds, I really need them to be closer to 7 pounds live.

Here are my videos from today of these silly lovely birds. I had to stop the video for a second so my neighbor didn't think I was some crazy chicken lady videoing my meat birds, (even though that is absolutely what I am). Enjoy! They are 7 weeks old now!
