I've always said which hatchery I got my Cornish X from. I got my layers from local feed stores and my newest babies from the side of the road. I don't know if the forum has rules on that or not. I never got flagged.

Ralph, I have gotten both of my batches from the same hatchery and have had two or three in each batch with some black or gray feathers.  I haven't seen anyone else's CX  pics have black feathers.

I have wanted to give my CX a bath when I did the last batch but my current batch is just so clean.  Glad to know it is a possibility.

Mine came from Hoover Hatchery in Rudd, Iowa.

They are all white and cute as can be. But they come with huge appetites, I just put mine away for the night. Amazing what a cottage cheese container of feed does some nights to get them to go in.....

And other nights they just refuse to go in......arrrrgh




But they do need baths!

I think all CX have huge appetites, no matter where they come from! Mine go in with a scoop of feed every night. They even run to greet me and show me the way. Love these guys!

I wish I could keep them but I just found out from a friend that someone wants to buy some from me when they are processed, so I guess I better get that freezer stocked up! Plus, I don't really know how long they would go before the health problems kicked in.

They do have huge appetites! My husband was just out there saying hello to them and became incredibly concerned because they were getting "deformed". I went to check and started laughing because their crops were so full they looked like they have tumors! Mind you, this is before I fed them dinner! Good little foragers those chicks are!

I thought the dark feathers were really interesting, too. Mine seem like they're all white, but they aren't fully feathered out yet. Talking about all these different hatcheries makes me want to try a couple different ones next year, too. I am thinking of trying Schlecht Hatchery and Central Hatchery based on prices and recommendations I've found online. Schlecht is about $1.40 per chick shipped and Central is only $1.12 per chick shipped to my zone.

I would be surprised if a Colorado feed store was ordering from a tiny hatchery in Oregon, but who knows. At least I'm not the only one with the black feathered guys.

Mine go around with their crops full too. They look so funny when they walk or run with a full crop. I can't even make a guess at what they are finding out there to munch on. Mine still always want dinner though.
