First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

Pics
Oh ralpie, you have definitely gotten me away from guineas in the spring! I'm sorry to hear about your meatballs being molested.

The dynamics have changed in my yard this weekend. I took 16 pullets and got 10 roosters and 4 muscovy ducks yesterday and some red warty things pumpkins.

We processed 1 rooster, he dressed out at 7.3 lbs with no giblets. The chicken vet is coming over in a few hours to pick up my ac roos for decrowing and to walk us through caponizing. I hope for less deaths this way, but the scalding pot is on standby.
Good luck on this, honey. Hope you do well.

Justice prevails!

I no longer have any red Sex Link roosters living here. He was tried and convicted in front of a fair judge. Final disposition will be Tuesday when he is basked in sage, thyme, salt and pepper and placed in an oven at 350 degrees for 90 minutes.

I doubt anymore CX's will be raped!

Sorry I've been quiet here. We had a big race in California this last week and I have been away. Glad to be back!

Mountain Mom - Mixer = something to mix with the vodka, like juice. Haha!

Wow! I read through the last few pages that I missed and the only thing that I can remember is this: processing day - set up to vodka took x amount of time for 5 birds. Haha! That cracks me up. The other thing is that Ralph's Cx had a conjugal visit and the perp is now food.

I really need to not leave for a week again! I miss out on too much!

Ok, I will post this here as I've been following this adventure. What kind of birds are these? Are they a giant breed of bird? lol

I say this because I have Barred Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, Easter Eggers, Rhode Island reds, Silver laced Wyandottes. 26 in total.
All are 6.5-7 weeks
I tried your method of using a digital scale and weighing myself with out and with a chicken.
I'm happy to announce I weigh 180.5 lbs. with no chicken. and 180.5 with a chicken in my arms.
How is it your chickens weigh so much and mine are filled with air.
Is it the food? they are all on starter/grower feed. I give them eggs once a week. and cucumbers here and there with some plain yogurt.
I want fat chickens like your birds.

I tried to put one of the fatter orpingtons on the scale, the bird sat there for 4-5 minutes and the scale didn't register a single ounce and turned off.
I have a weight watchers digital scale.

I just want fat birds. Help me get fat birds.

Our meat chickens are Cornish X. They are bred to grow fast and put on a lot of weight by the commercial chicken producers. Your chickens are layers and they are bred to lay eggs. You won't get heavy birds from them. From what I understand, even the dual purpose birds you have like the Rocks and Orpingtons won't be heavy breasted meat birds. My 4 week old Cornish X chicks weigh more than my 8 month old Easter Eggers.

I am officially sad now.
Oh well, live and learn.
Guess I have chicken kabob birds, haha

Thanks for the reply.

I am going for a 15 lbs dressed chicken......

One of my red sex link hens has moved into the CX's tractor... I think the word is getting out they get food every evening when the others go without.

Wow, and that's saying something.

Hello, all, yes, Jessica, we missed you. My fellow finished his part of the coop yesterday and I'm going to order some CX's on the 1st. It's warm in La and I don't expect any trouble. I told Clint, the handyman, about getting the CX's and he said he had them before and had a wretched time with them. Lazy, dirty, smelly, yada, yada. I'm gonna show him how it's done.

On the first he will finish putting the hardware cloth on the coop and building me a 20' x 30' run for the babies. I hope I have a good time.
