First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

Glad you found your chubbies Ralph! My little Sunny is going to lay an egg any day, i am sure of it! She is doing deep squat and I've heard her doing the bakawking with the other hens. She is in full practice mode! I admit after reading from others that CX lay brown eggs, I am a bit sad. I was hoping for a white since everyone else lays other colors. Oh well, I'll it it too.

You do not want white egg chickens. They are all erratic, skittish and crazy. Leghorns. Can't wait to get lights out to the coop. Buying eggs is the pits. I got up at 4am to go out and get the sleeping rooster in the coop to move him to the growout pen so I have room to put my new Blosl White Plymouth Rock rooster I'm picking up. I have the 3 pullets that should start laying as soon as I get light and I'm going to start hatching. The seller of my rooster said he's all MAN. Of course, he named him "Larry the rooster". Huh? I'm changing that to Studmuffin or Big Boy. I want him busy!!!! I also have a Coronation Sussex and 2 Super Blue Egg layers in the coop. I'm hatching everything.

Keep us inform on the amount of the eggs Sunny gets.

My chubby girls are way too young to lay eggs. They are my babies! They cannot even date yet, let alone lay eggs.

I cannot wait to get the light out of my coop. I am taking it out soon, to give them a chance to rest and assure I get the eggs I need in the spring.

I am getting too many eggs. Right now I have 8 dozen eggs I cannot get rid of. We can only eat so many.

BTW I have one sorta white egg. It is the prettiest egg. especially alongside my brown, pink, green and blue eggs, it just looks "pure" if that makes sense. It is a small to medium egg at best.

BAD DAY!!!

I lost a chubby baby last night.

It appears to have been a mink or weasel. It just took the head off it. Tonight they move to a more secure coop. The use of the igloo is over.

It was safe to anything but a mink or weasel. Nothing in my trap either...

I had to take a "head count" of the remaining chubbies to see which one it was, It appears to have been my largest hen, if there is a bright point, it is my rooster is still alive so I have a chance to have frogs this spring.

When I first saw it I was afraid it was the rooster.

I HATE that for you Ralph, That is the only predators that ever got 2 of my chickens. Inside the chain link fence. Scooted through 1" wire.

Thanks.

They are the hardest things to keep out. Where is the eagle or owl when I need them?

I am worried about my other coop, the one they are going into. but it is 100 yards from the igloo. However, my layers are only 30 feet away I hope their coop is tight enough.

That is terrible Ralph! I dread the day that I lose a bird. It did think I spotted a hawk in my neighbor's tree two weeks ago. The vultures seem to have moved on and now the hawks are back. Grrr.

I just wanted Sunny to lay a white egg. That way I would know for sure that it was hers when I found it in the nest laying next to my tiny silkie's egg. My other hens slide into the silkie nest sometimes. Just last week I found a blue egg and a brown egg in there. I don't think it was Sunny's though. I think it was one of Buff Orpingtons that laid it there.

Do you have any bantam breeds that lay a cream egg? Our silkie lays almost white eggs. Next to the brown ones it looks white for sure.

My sorry band of scraggly ragamuffin chickens is hardly laying at all. One egg, every few days. 8 Gals, most of which are molting, one is broody, and one is too young.

Sorry to hear about your meatball loss! D*&# eagle is nowhere to be found now, huh?!
Was the trap at all tampered with? We have some traps in our barn (for the rats, yes we have rats here) that the smaller mice can sneak the bait out of because they are not heavy enough to snap the trap.

Sorry about the weasel attack, Ralphie.

Before we electrified our fence, we lost a chicken to a weasel slinking through the chicken wire. All they take is the head and neck. So sad.
