First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

Jessica, I hope I did not step on your toes with my questions and observations. I can't help myself, I am an old busy body....

Speaking of which, I found this in the liquor store today, I was only in the liquor store to see what they are all about......

I like Mikes Hard lemonade, I find it refreshing... BUT I saw this on the can when I got home..

I was shocked! Can I sue them for this? Of course, the serious question is why label it like this? It can only be sold in a liquor store, people go into them for the sole purpose of buying alcohol,,,,,,,,DUH..

BTW time to go check on the chickies now that I have my refreshments...

for anyone wondering what this post has to do with cX's, it is simple...A person needs this stuff to raise Cxs!

We are still doing our research and working through the logistics of buying the business. The eggs are no corn/soy and cage free. They sell for $4.50 dozen direct, stores charge a couple dollars more. Remember I live in the land of Granola. There really is only one depreciable asset and we actually may choose to not purchase it for 1. To save money. 2. The way we are planning our operation we shouldn't need it and 3. We would need to build a building big enough to house the asset, thus costing more money. No worries Ralph. We are smart people and will certainly have all of our ducks in a row before making a move. Thanks for looking out for us. :)
Big decision, Honey, take your time. It does sound terrific. I'm a jump in type of person myself and I really have to rein in the decision. If you decide to start smaller go on youtube and find a video about a fellow and his dad building large movable hoop houses. Made with PVC tubing and about 20' wide by 30 or so long. They move it because it is lightweight. Put 100 or more layers in it at a time and move it ever so often. Several smaller houses arund and have a separate nesting coop. for several houses. You've got room don't you. Hubby can retire early and do chores and you can keep money coming in with your job. win-win

Anything under 12%, like beer, can be sold any place.

Not in Minnesota, We are the ultimate nanny state, Only beer you can get anywhere other than a liquor store is 3.2AC. Minnesota requires the breweries to cut their beer down to 3.2 or less to be sold in a gas station or Grocery store. Even then you need to buy a special license to sell it and you cannot sell it at all on Sunday....

Now on a different note, I have returned from my trip to the coop to check on Rick. He was not in the coop. I did not get rattled though, I did a wise thing, I sat on a straw bale and finished my can of Mikes Lemonade and talked to the pullets. They did not know where Rick had went, but they stated he was in the coop earlier, packing a suitcase. SOOOOOOOOO after finishing said lemonade, I carefully placed the can in the waste barrel I keep near the coop. ( I know this will shock some of you, but I do not have a recycle barrel in the coop. I collected rent from a few of the pullets and went looking for Rick. Ernie was just outside the coop, he was strutting his stuff, but would not tell me where Rick went.

I saw the nameless rooster but he refused to even talk to me. JJ told me Rick was headed east north east with a suitcase. One of my barred rocks volunteered to make the trip with me to find Rick. After about 50 yards the Barred Rock realized I was not going to feed her so she turned around and went back towards her coop. I went to ask Bert if he had seen Rick. Bert told me he was in his coop, and was cuddling with one of Bert's girls. Bert was very open minded about the arrangement though and did not make a fuss. Because of Rick's depression and recent illness, I asked Bert if he would mind if Rick stayed with him for a few days.

Bert was very happy to allow Rick to spend some time with them. I then informed Rick he could stay there, if he wanted too. Rick thanked me profusely. I then went into the house to have another lemonade. Making these tough managerial decisions is hard on an old guy like me.

Does anyone see any reason I should not let Rick move in with the CXs?

Looks to me he already has. Not too depressed anymore?

The joy of a few good women.

I found the post...

The red around the hackles makes her a BSL? This is good to know. I was going to try breeding her to my Black Australorp just because of her coloring. I think I will still do that. I know the babies will not be Sex linked, but that does not bother me. I will just eat the boys, it will mean skinning them instead of plucking.
Why would you have to skin a dark feathered bird? Once the feathers are off, you won't know the difference... at least that's how my naked birds look. Can't tell what color feathers they used to have... (if I do a good enough job!!!)

Oh Ralph, I already knew you were an old busy body. Lol! Just so you know, I'm a redhead. Therefore, no one steps on my toes unless I let them. But anyway, no, I appreciate the concern and questions. Food for thought is always good. You never know if there was something that you hadn't thought of if someone doesn't offer suggestions. I am also one of those that doesn't get offended easily. I was raised right.

So today I hung cds from the trees where my girls like to hang out the most and was the scene of the crime. I have erected the body for the scare crow, now I just need to rummage through my husband's drawers for some clothes for the scare crow. Next thing is to move the farm truck out so that there is a place for the girls to run and hide when spooked and my husband is going to make a mini shelter from a large freight box we have laying around. The real problem with the area is no place to run for cover. I screwed up on this because it really was at the back of my mind that this was a problem. Boy did I get a slap in the head to get me moving. Stupid me!

We acquired a little more info on the business today and are still in the research and writing up a proposal stage. Still trying to decide what we shall do.

Linda: My husband and I tend to jump in with both feet on business opportunities but we do nonstop research to make sure we are making the right choice first. We have discussed hoop coops for the lightweight aspect but my husband wants to do something a bit more substantial I think. No huge pole barn with chickens stuck inside though. I want my chickens feet to touch grass. We don't have a huge amount of land but we know people that do so, we will see what happens.

Lazy Gardener I found my BSL roosters to be a pain in the rear when I cleaned them. The feathers did not come out easy and they had a ton of pin feathers and almost ingrown feathers. I personally will only skin them from now on. I even tried burning the pin feathers off like my Mom and Grandma did, I was not so good at it.

I also found the BSL to be a little on the small side, however, the stuff I have read afterwards suggests I should have let them get older than 19 weeks. Never get me wrong I will eat any chicken, I will just skin the ones with feathers that are too hard to get out and ingrown. BTW I can tell what breed every bird I pull out of the freezer is...

I marked them with color coded wire ties around the wings so I could see if one breed is better than the others for taste. texture and appearance...........

Some call me anal about these weird things..

Ralph- Those Mike Lemonades are a very refreshing beverage! One of my go to drinks on a hot day! Sadly, I don't think it will ever be hot here again. The thermometer has said low 50's for the past 2 days, but with the hurricane force winds, sure doesn't feel balmy. Sigh.
Colorado liquor sale law is the same, 3.2 beer in grocery/gas stations. All liquor selling establishments sell on Sunday though. That one changed about 10 years ago.
Anyhow, I see nothing wrong with letting Rick move in with the babies. As long as you realize they are not babies anymore...

And I kind of like the name "Nameless" for your new head roo. The Rooster with No Name. Makes him sound like a rogue cowboy.

Jessica- I didn't have you pictured with red hair! Funny, I completely have a vision of how everyone here at Jessica's Bar and Grill, without the Grill looks like. And what your properties look like.
I hope the CD's and scarecrow keep the hawk away! We have a few of those fake owls (with the moving heads) on our fence by the garden. I think they help, a little anyhow. Next summer the kids and I are making a scarecrow for the garden. More for the dang camp robbers and stellar jays. They are pesky. The chickens do a great job running them out of the yard, but the chickens are not allowed in the garden.

Today I think I have to do a mid winter coop clean out. I use the deep litter method, and love it, but it has been really humid (which is really weird for Colorado) and I can foresee a dampness related health issue in the future. The wood chips just seem damp. Better safe than sorry. I may need goggles and a face mask for this task today. The wind is going to make it so much fun.

Holy cats we are in a heat wave it has been in the upper twenties lower thirties. So we have pulled out the t shirts and put away the coats!! The chickens are loving it
