First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

Excellent description!
400

I let my meaties out the top gate into our front yard for a wander. I also had my 2 week old chicks in a chicken tractor for an hour whilst the sun came out and I could clean their box.
There was an electric moment when they eyed each other through the hardwire. It was a real parent -child moment for half of them if they'd only realized it. And of course that delightful thing where the adults go pecking through the chick poo leftovers -yuk! :p

I have a 3 day old squirt called Cracker - a female mistral gris that I am putting in the box with the others in careful doses. She is the only one that made it out of the egg -I think I need to change the wafer, the temp swung wildly in the last day, Grr! Anyway she runs around them wildly now, avoiding their feet pretty well and pecking the food out of their mouth. They are so patient with her, its lovely to watch. I have a large cardboard refrigerator box I got from sears and modified. They have a long pole going through it 2/3 of the way up and it's so sweet watching them roosting on it or walking the plank or using it to leap up to the top edge. Can't wait til the weather gets better and they can stay outside longer!

Here are chicken tractor update pics:

This shows the side walls that fold out to provide the hens with shade and rain protection. They will fold back in when we move the tractor or it is stormy.

The biggest tarp for the top finally came in! We had to put it right on to see how it looked!

Sorry about the mess in back!! This thing is huge Its 12ft x 12ft x 3ft. Who knew a few dumb kids could pull this off all by themselves!! Its not beautiful but I don't care about beauty. 1 down 2 left

And my handy feeder setup. As u see the hens on the outside are shredding the feed bag when I was taking pics!

Linda I missed you too!! Hope you get on the mend double quick!

I wrote a big long post with pictures, but it disappeared, and I have 2 roosters in the basement having a crowing contest and echoing up the heating vents and there's 3" of snow on the ground since this morning after an 80f week last week.

My bf is building me soundproof rooster housing in our basement because the neighbors are not happy with our rooster situation, crow reduction surgery or not.

And my friend that got me sucked into rare chicken breeds was just diagnosed with end stage ovarian cancer. I have been crying every day since I was told. I don’t want to lose my good friend and chicken mentor! :( :( :(

So because I'm so sad, and my bf is attached to the roosters too, and because I may need to bring my other line of ayam cemani and the svart honas over sooner than later.. and my bf is awesome... so he is building me indoor breeding/housing pens and soundproofing that room. I think I have a keeper on my hands :)

I'm at a loss wtd for my friend..any suggestions? Chemo is not even an option, 6 months or less.. trying to make it count to show her how much our brief but very close friendship means to me.

Oh.. and I am FINALLY getting duck eggs :) & 4 young laying ccl join my flock Friday for $100 delivered by my chicken vet that does the crow reduction surgery. I wonder what she will think of us having to build soundproof rooster quarters?

DK I am so sorry to hear all these bad things!!!

Thanks I really like that tractor it is quite sturdy and I can fit lots more birds in there than I have now...

Holm it appears you stole me redneck tractor plans but made it bigger Nice job..

Hey DK sorry to hear all the problems. I think you need a new neighbor if she complains about a de-crowed rooster. I bet she would complain if you offered to hang her with a new rope too!

Linda Hurry home....

Jessica I like the tractor more and more..

MM I found this today:

I have no idea which turkey dropped it. It was lying next to the waterer I doubt it is Ethels as she hides hers well.

Ahyway it has started I should be able to send some in a couple weeks ..Keep your broody broody!

Thanks I made this one tall enough so I can put turkeys and geese in it I think we are gonna get 4-6 geese this spring and I imagine they will lay in hidden spots like turkeys. And we will probably put the 13 turkeys we ordered in the once old enough so Terry doesn't kill them.
