First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

You people!! Where are you?

Do you have lives that do not revolve around chickens and this web site? How sick is that!

We changed Bert's dressings and my DW lanced his pad and toe again. When she did a long string of "yucky stuff" came out. I think that is a good sign. BTW "yucky stuff" was her term, so it most be medical something.

I was too busy holding Bert to see it myself.

She gave Bert a reprieve, he gets to spend another night inside! He has even moved one step closer t becoming a house rooster! He is living in a box in the hallway instead of the bath tub. I can't wait until I can sit watch TV and have a Mike's with Bert on my lap.

No activity in the incubator for tomorrows hatch.

I checked the broody's eggs ( 2 of the 10) when she got off the nest for fresh water. No pips in the 2 I looked at, all seemed warm, I did not think she could keep 10 eggs warm as she is so small, but she seems to be, she has them all neatly arranged in a single layer too! I did not look long at the eggs as she had a bad attitude towards me feeling her eggs.

I often wonder where everyone is too when I am actually able to check in here regularly. I will see no posts for a couple of days and then miss a day to come back to 6 pages of posts.

Anyway, we are still crazily trying to get the mobile chicken house done so we can move everyone home. In the meantime, I'm trying to maintain my sanity long enough to stand the wait. The daily drive is killing me. I am asleep at the wheel in a depressive state. I almost hit two large young men crossing the street the other day because I was in such a daze. I swear they came out of nowhere! I NEVER saw them until they were 2 feet from my bumper. I so need a break.....

So glad Bert gets another night inside.

I spent the day with my husband trying to turn our chicken coop into Fort Knox. More electric wire strung, more brush cleared away from the coop, and finer gauge mesh put on the gate, which does not have the electric fencing. I then went around on hands and knees and filled in any uneven ground that created more than a one inch gap under the last electric wire. We also baited and set a weasel trap.

Raphie, glad to hear the Bert is on the mend.

I wish you well on the trapline success. They are terrible little creatures and keeping them out is near impossible.

Thanks, I am hoping he is on the mend, but who knows. He seems better, but that could be wishful thinking on my part. I should not have become so attached to bird with so much stacked against him in terms of longevity.

His moving into the house and all the things we are doing for him is just making us more attached.

Morrigan- If any weasel makes their way in, I will be surprised! Sounds like it should be predator proof, for sure!

Jessica- Keep on doing what you are doing! I am sure it is more than exhausting, but honestly, you are working towards a greater good! Not just your business.

Ralph- So happy to hear Bert is one step closer to reclining with a Mikes! I wonder what the "yucky stuff" was... poor guy. Hope he keeps on the mend. I personally know that happy chicken noises while they eat is a good sign. Or maybe it is just my wishful thinking that it meant my chicken was getting better. The one who didn't make happy chicken noises while seeming to "recover" didn't get better. Anyhow, keep pampering Bert!
Also, I think just bribing your granddaughter with a new chicken... all will be forgiven and you are a step closer to having her on your side! Maybe a diamond encrusted lady... gals like sparkles.

So today, I witnessed something quite serious. Capitan Jack Sparrow, aka Sparrow, is a FIERCE broody. There were no eggs laid in the nest boxes. She chased everyone out. All were laid in a makeshift nest on the coop floor. AND, she then started stealing the eggs and putting them in the nesting box she was guarding with her ferocious life.
Also, when she leaves her post, she will growl the entire time she is gone. Maybe I should give her some turkey eggs...
But at this point, I just want to continue with the path decided.

Today I went to church. I have been going to swap meets and selling chicks. It's been fun but I get busy and can't comment too much. I mostly just check in to see what everyone is doing.

Ditto on life getting in the way. I have been busy doing stuff and trying to recover from the injury I gave myself on my knee. It's better but stupidity runs in the family. I have to learn which is the bad knee and not use it sometimes.

I'm so enjoying the thread. So much going on. Ralph, take care of your baby. Jessica, you blow me away with your energy. Kudos. Everybody, you bring me joy. Keep on keeping on.

Thank you MM! It is absolutely exhausting! I am really just trying to hold onto what will be soon.

Linda, I wish I could tell you that I have a ton of energy but I really don't. I am beat. I am in pain. I have a hurt left knee, two sore ankles, sore right hip and lower back is acting up. The good ole' fibromyalgia flare is working up for me again. I am crabby. I can't get comfy at night because of the pain so I am not sleeping. I am anxious. I have to constantly remind myself to take it one day at a time and really stay positive as I can because in the end, there will be success. No one reaches success without a ton of work, exhaustion, pain and stress.

Here are some pics from today:

Roosts in the chicken tractor!

Water barrels are secured.

We are so close!!

Our CX pullets are 5 weeks old now and doing good. I've been tossing them and the other chicks out into the run everyday because the weather has been fantastic. Our daughter wanted to name one "Jenny", so of course we now call all of them "Jennie-O".

Can I eat that?

This is "Big Boy" the Black Langshan cock I'm hoping to cross them to.

Sometimes I call him "Turkey Tail" for his wonderfully wide backside.
