First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

My mom thinks it would be a good idea to get some cx to put underneath one of our broodies, but from what l've heard, they have many health issues. So l'm thinking that if there is a better meat chicken if we go to the store, then l would prefer that. l've only had 2 chicks die on me, l want to keep that number low.

ZachyWachy, regarding your questions, the key for preventing health problems is restricted diet, they grow very fast already. Just make sure they get plenty of activity and other than that they'll be fine.

However, if you're looking for an alternative meat bird, you have a lot of options. At freedom ranger hatchery, you'll find crosses descended from Hubbard redbros called freedom rangers, and hubbard's black breeders called black broilers. They both have good growth rate. A nice slow, differentiated growth flock could have naked neck broilers, barred broilers, brown broilers, etc. mixed together.

I haven't checked that. Curse you, JRNash, I'll be back after I waste a week reading that and reading everything related to it, and everything related to the related things!!!!!!!!

TGP, I read an average of one 300pg book a day, or night when I'm NOT working. I get distracted easily when I'm reading, some fact or quote will make me tear out on a fact finding mission. Some of the the things you've posted has caused me do additional reading in order to understand better a topic. SO.... if I've given YOU something to read :) I owed ya one.lol:ya
