first signs of cannibalism

Our feather eating has gotten out of hand lately. The coop is littered with feathers and I have caught 4 birds in the act of plucking and eating. I'm thinking I may need to up the protein. I was using a scratch without BOSS in it to get them moving in the morning and late afternoon since it has been cold. I have just started using the BOSS instead of scratch. I'm also thinking I need to get a higher protein ... I'm using 16%. Does the cold make them need more protein or is it the egg laying or both? They are cooped up but by choice since they all have access to the run but haven't gone out in days besides poking their heads out the door.

A red light is recommended to prevent this it does not contribute to it.

Most likely the birds aren't getting enough protein and this can happen if your relying on to many treats to keep the feed bill down. Second if they are confined and bored they will do this. Because BO's are considered a passive breed I would say it' s the protein. Feed that is old can lose it's nutrients so make sure you are getting fresh.

Get some "blue kote" and use that. Just be careful it' stains.

Hope things improve
