First silkie chick. HELP!!!

I put mine outside in their little pens and let them act like a chicken. They don't go out if it is raining or cold and windy. Otherwise they are chickens and very sweet pets. Some people do groom their Silkies but I haven't the time to groom them all and mine look no worse for wear being outside every day on the ground when it isn't wet and muddy.

Does it look like he has problems being outside every day? Even the little white hen scratches in the dirt all day and stays in good shape. Could be our good upstate SC dirt but they just don't need any help. Unless you have escapees that run through a weedy patch. We picked cockle burrs out of their foot feathers last summer.
It depends on where you live and what type of weather you have and the pen they will stay in.

No, they don't require extra grooming. They care for themselves just like any other chicken. They do have feathers on their legs, so if you want to show them you will want to keep them from playing in mud. Also, they can sometimes get really big crests on their heads that interfere with their range of sight. If you are not going to show it is sometimes best to trim it a little.

the only extra attention they need is against scaley leg mites (goes with all feathered leg breeds), and possibly a haircut if they are heavily feathered around the eyes.
