First steps to change local laws?

Ok,

So after a TON of research, if I get chickens I'd be an Outlaw. Which i'd be perfectly willing to say "screw the consequences" and do anyways if not for one well, two things. First off, our alderman lives literally across the street. Her youngest kid is ALWAYS asking to come in our backyard because he is obsessed with our dogs. (he only comes in when supervised) I'm SURE if we got chickens, word would get back to her, and no amount of free fresh eggs could probably bribe her (ha ha). Secondly, our property abutts a large well populated park. There are kids in it at all hours of the day and night and for SURE they'd be noticed.


Do i start with drafting a letter to the alderman? A local neighboring city JUST voted to allow backyard chickens, limit of 5-6 NO ROOSTERS. So I think if I can possibly start a big enough grassroots campaign, I could possibly get it "legal". And, since I currently can't AFFORD the chickens, getting them legal before I spend money on them, seems like a good plan.

I would say a good start would be to run against the alderwoman. Then you'll know that you have at least one support on town council! That's how I'm working to change things here in south central PA.

Why don't you strike up a conversation with the alderman and see what she thinks? She could be a good ally. Talk about pet chickens and see what her reaction is. If her reaction is too negative, find a different route.
