My barred rock gal went broody 24 days ago, so I put 14 fertile eggs from her sisters under her and isolated her from the flock because of snake problems. Well on day 20 I checked her nest and found a dead fully developed chick. I think momma stepped on her or something. The next day (21) a cute little black sex link pullet:D, Day 22 another link pullet. She immediatly got the 2 chicks off the nest and didnt retun. So I put the remaining 11 eggs in the lg Im going to use as a hatcher, And about an hour started smelling something bad. I took the eggs outside and tossed 1 against the tree, pop!!! Rotten, all 11 were rotten. I candled all on day 12 and they were developing nicley, What went wrong? She was wonderful about nesting, really proud od her.

I have had bad luck this year with my broody hens. I think that the hot temps have played a huge part in the eggs going rotten.
I looked back at the weather temps for the days my hens were setting. And found that the temps were 99 to 101 with heat indexes upwards of 110 deg. This was from day 7 to 15 on 7 hens , I saved 2 chicks and one hen hatched 3 chicks, the others were all rotten or the hens killed chicks. The one hen that hatched 3 chicks I expected to not hatch any as she was up and down allot, well I guess she knew better than me. The other hens stayed tight to the nest not getting up. I fill that the weather had a big part in it just like temp spikes in an incubator.
If I have my way I'll only set hens in cooler weather or set them up where I can control the temps around them, by fans or air-con.
I still have 3 hens that are wanting to be broody, I'm trying to break them. Its just too hot outside.
I have my incubator going at day 16 with all eggs looking great.
With the house temps staying at around 70 to 75 deg.

This may have been what happen to your eggs, congrats on the 2 chicks maybe she will brood again earlier next year.
