But I also know that it's better than what the store bought ones go through! But it's harder than i thought.

But find comfort in knowing they are calm.

For me, it bothers me to think about someone else processing them. Not that I mind anyone processing birds, but our birds know us and do not panic when we handle them.

Very true! Ours are completely trusting...especially one of the ones we just processed because he spent a bit with us on "hospital stay" after an injury from falling off the roost. After that,he always looked for attention. Thanks for your point of view..it makes sense.Less stress if it's us.

That's a good point - it's better than what the store bought ones go through. At least your birds have someone that cares about them, and cares about the sacrifice that chicken is making.

I keep thinking that back in "the old days" that's what women did. They went out and chopped the head off of a chicken for their family for supper. It sounds gross, but it's actually the picture I have in my head. A woman is providing for her family, which is what I am planning on doing - and what you are already doing.

I think it was pretty hard butchering, but, I want'd to learn how and thought I gotta learn sooner or later. So I chose sooner. It wasn't AS hard as I thought it would be, although I do feel bad.

I know, now a days we are so unaccustomed to harming an animal.I mean,my whole life I was taught to be kind to animals. My mom always bought meat from the store...my grandparents farmed for a time but that was before my time,so I'm strictly acting on my own here just from researching things and trying to change my families life for the better.I explained to the kids about treating the chickens right and making sure they have adequate food, water, clean bedding etc. and they are SPOILED! ( the chickens, not the kids

)They know it's important to me to make sure these things are done routinely. So when I say "harm" I mean it as in "killing". I do get some peace of mind knowing they have a great life while they are here and are dearly treasured.Takes some getting used to though,if you were brought up on store bought meat!

You want to know how I deal with stuff like this?

My secret..

I am a VEGETARIAN.

Works like a charm.

It is not wimpy to consider your bird's well being.

Enough said.
