First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

I'm with you two! I'm certain that I'll have at least one cockerel. In order to get Silkies at the farm store, I had to get straight run. Just waiting to see which ones.

Feeling the same way, I fear my favorite, my EE (Marshmallow) is a roo.

I know it's hard to see because of the red light but Chickaletta is such a lover, always acting motherly towards the younger chicks

I just got my last 3 chicks from the post office this morning and 2 of the 3 seem to be catching on really quickly. But, the third, a crested SFH hasnt stopped distress cheeping since she got here. She is eating and drinking, but i cant get her to spend more than 10 seconds under the ecoglow. What should i do??

When I introduced my chick's to the Ecoglow I placed them under the Ecoglow, then put my hand in front of them so they could not get out. Once they felt the warmth they didn't try to escape any longer. Hope this helps. I had 10 to train and this method worked very well.

Major newbie here. Just picked up two Americaunas from the feed store. After a week under the heat lamp it's starting to get ripe. My question is: do I just pile on more shavings or sweep it clean and refill the brooder?

Just two chicks shouldn't smell in a week. I'd take the shavings out, and I'll bet you'll find the area under the water is wet, and that the wet area has spread out quite a bit. That's where much of that smell comes from - wet food and litter mixed in with poop. Put in new shavings, then monitor the litter under the water. Just take that area out when it gets wet and put dry shavings on top. That should solve the issue.

Water dish is raised up on blocks and the heat lamp keeps everything pretty baked. I'm actually gonna tone down the type of bulb today see if I can regulate it better.

The smell is kinda war poo and dry wood. Either way I think I will do a sweep and fill thx
