First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

I just picked up my chicks last night! Everyone is under their adoptive broody and doing well. I got 5 Black Copper Marans (feather legged), 4 Barred Rocks, and 4 "Olive Eggers" (I got those from a separate person and have my suspicions). Big shout out to JBJ Poultry in Moody, Texas for being so helpful and taking their time to really help make sure I got what I wanted!

My favorite Olive Egger thus far.

So cute!
Do tell about your suspicions....

I was so proud of myself today, went to the store for feed, they still had lots of chicks from this weeks order. I resisted and left with only feed which must be a record. My saving grace was only that I knew the chicks labeled cuckoo Marans were wrong... Get home and I'm playing with my chicks for the first time today and I find more pink wattles, so at less than 4 weeks that makes atleast 4/11 that are Roos

dang now I have to make space for more chicks to replace those Roos

Thanks!
I'm just not really certain. The guy that I got them from wasn't super helpful and he had a kid pull the chicks out for me to pick from (after the kid asked how he would know which ones were Olive Eggers). And the picking through them trying my best to guess which ones were females, they all look a bit different. Which, as OEs they're kind of mixed mutts anyway, so I get that. But the one looks very similar to my Marans, just without the leg feathering. But we'll find out in about 6 months, I suppose. Lol I'll take more pictures of those four tomorrow. :) oh and the fellow told me that they were 2weeks old when I talked to him on the phone, but I really don't think these look that old. But I don't know chicks. Sooo, I don't know. Just all seemed a little cloudy to me.
@captivatedlife - thank you! I'm so very excited!

My adoptive broody mama did such a wonderful job with all her babies today. <3
(This is one of the OEs on top of mama)

Mama Temperance and her babies all tucked in for the evening. Snug as bugs in a rug.... Or chicks under a hen... Lol

Hoping I haven't missed something, but don't females in some breeds have wattles too?? My Silver Laced Wyandotte has some little red wattles starting to show with her little flat comb starting to redden. Despite this, my vote is still female.Thoughts anyone?

If you are talking to me... I'm pretty sure it's the timing of them turning red that makes the difference all of mine are 1-4wks old so the fact that they are already red makes them boys... Atleast that was how I understood it but I'm new...

I'm new too, but I haven't read anything about sexing that soon based on wattles... but we're all bound to learn something eveyday. Just keeping fingers crossed (now for both of us) that these chicks aren't roos after all! Besides, I'm not sure my Sarah could learn to be called by anything else... :bow

Lol ya I've been living on the gender/breed forum trying to learn what I can. They seem to go off them a lot with the younger chicks, wait it out is always tried and true but who wants to wait?! This is why I'm so regretting my mixed flock it's so hard to compare anything. I think this is the last week of chicks at our store too just to add to the pressure of course... Chickens are a bit stressful I'm finding lol
