First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

Hmmm...more time free ranging for my older girls (13 weeks old) backfired on me yesterday. They were absolutely stuffed full when it was time to go back into the kennel! Couldn't entice them with either their feed or BOSS. Had to catch them individually again...and a motivated chicken can RUN! Unfortunately all my mealworms have turned into pupae and beetles, otherwise I would have a sure-fire method of calling them in. May have to see how they like dried mealworms. One drawback to not having them at home is not being able to use the natural sunset/roosting behaviors to get them cooped up.

I post it to YouTube.  Then I play it and while it's playing I right-click on the URL in the box and click copy.  Then come here, open a new post or reply, and click on that little movie film icon.  A box will pop up that says it supports Vimeo and YouTube.  Click in the box, click on Paste, and then submit.  All done.
I'm on my phone. There isn't a video icon.

HI!!!!

I want to join in too! My family and I are going to be first time chick parents as well. We have a roomy shed we are converting into a coop. We are so excited!!!!

I've already contacted the farm we are going to pick up chicks from. Our chicks are going to be Silver Laced Wyanottes (4) and Easter Eggers (4). My daughter (who is 5) is so excited, she is using her 15$ of birthday money for the chicks. Whatever she gets she gets to name as well.

Does anyone have a hard time telling their chicks apart at first? Or is it fairly easy once you get home and spend time with them? (the people who already have their first chicks).

Our chick adoption day is May 29th! We are all sooooooo excited!!!!!

HI!!!!

I think it took we about a day to be able to tell em apart just like twins. But as they grow it gets easier. Thought rockies and wisky look alot a like and same with personality they have a stripe difference I. Their feathers that helps me know who I am talking to. Hubby still can't tell em apart.

Well, I was digging for worms under a pile of grass clippings for the older chicks and found a bunch....plus a big juicy grub. My lord, you'd think they never had food before lol. Only one chick was brave enough to tackle the grub, and she ran around with it for a while, then gobbled it right down. Lucky girl lol.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who does this! I've been having an unusual problem though, I'm so used to wanting the big worms for fishing and now that I want the small ones for the chicks they are no where to be found. Mine aren't quite brave enough to tackle the night crawlers. And it never fails that whoever is brave enough to try something new gets instantly chased and food stolen lol rude little chickens...

I just discovered that if you bother your husband with enough coop building questions to be annoying he might just offer up the shed he's been hoarding junk in
