First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

Nugget (Easter Egger) died today. Doors got left open, and netting on the brooder got left off, and the dog got into them. The other two were all wet, but seem to be okay. :(

Oh my gosh! :( I'm so sorry to hear that. It's so heartbreaking. Especially since we get so attached to each and every one. Each little life is so precious. I am truly sorry you lost her. When I first got my girls from the post office, day 1, my 16 year old son wasn't paying any attention and left my bathroom door wide open. I'm brooding in the bathroom! I have 3 dogs and 4 inside cats. Thank God I discovered it in time as I went to check, two of my cats were in the bathroom staring at my chicks! I think what saved them was I'm brooding in a large dog cage and they couldn't get to them through the bars. Boy did I have a talk with my son after that! A very close call. If my large dog would have gone in there she would have figured out how to knock over the cage for sure so I got very lucky. I know these kind of accidents happen..again I'm very sorry she's gone.

Did you buy from a hatchery or a farm breeder? I'm wondering if there is a difference? I've seen some threads that say there is.

Losing one is common though as far as I can tell. I think we are considering getting 10 since that's our max, so we can have wiggle room in case we lose any.

We got ours from a feed store, so a hatchery. I think Townline is the one they go through. The rest are healthy, though.

Yeah, she was the sweetest one of them, too. Well, the kids learned a few life lessons...

These guys are so skiddish. I wish I had more time to spend with them. The male Australorp seems to be the only tame one. Did anyone else's chicks go through a phase of being super jumpy but turn into sweeties?

Hi I am also a newbie chick mama!!! Thank you for starting this forum!! I am blessed with 6 healthy ISABrowns that are growing very nicely. I got them when they were 4 days old and have truly enjoyed the experience. I have been googling information about how them but it will be nice to share stories to help me raise them the best I can. Any information you want to share about your chicks would be awesome. I will do the same. They were 4 weeks old yesterday and the picture I posted was taken a few days ago. Enjoy your chicks would love to hear from you!!

Uhg. My same naughty Barred Rock is all in a tizzy this morning again. I don't know what her deal is. She peeps incessantly. She doesn't go under her mama. She doesn't seek the heat lamp (she goes away from it actually). And she just peeps and peeps. She does this in the mornings, and then by the afternoon she's generally quiet. Her vent looks fine, but the area of the umbilicus does look scabbed. And she is smaller than everyone else. She is perhaps only a day younger than everyone else at most-- if she's not the same age. I don't know if she's just a FTT, or what her deal is. But she'll peep and peep and even close her eyes like she's tired and keep on peeping. Sometimes she'll have her little wings out a bit. She's my only problem baby. Any ideas?
