First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

What kind do you use? I think for now I might get a bowl of sand from out back and make sure it's coarse enough until I can find something better.

You can get builder's sand where they sell landscaping supplies...often used in conjunction with paving stones. I got mine at Home Depot. If you're considering using sand in your coop/run you can buy it by the truckload like gravel.

Just ordered 10 black sex links 10 barred rock 7 golden nugget and 7 production red can't wait till the 2nd of June

also I threw sand from my gravel pit in my coop for the chicks is that grit enough or should I throw some actual grit in a hand full a day for them to scratch and pick for?

Excited to be here!

I have 2 & 3 week old chicks, I would like they start giving some treats, can I sprinkle grit on snacks or should they have grit available all the time? Thanks

I mixed grit into the chicks' crumbles. Dried mealworms and sod clumps were huge hits with my girls, and still are at 9 weeks!

Sigh. East Frisian Gulls are really, really fragile. I've lost more than half of them now while the Queen Silvias are going strong. I thought that everything had stabilized when I didn't lose any for a few days...then I switched the Nutri-drench for regular water...two dead today. I don't think I'll ever be getting any more of this breed unless some of these survive to produce offspring through natural brooding. It's been too heart-breaking.
