First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

I am so proud!

How do you get your chicks to eat food leftover treats. Veggies and fruits? I've tried three and they just aren't receptive. Am I doing something wrong? Once with apple slices, twice with strawberry heads and a third time with tomatoes.

Do I just have 12 chicks that don't like food scraps?

We gave the babies two strawberries and they moved away from them like I'd put a snake in there. I "peck" my finger on almost everything I give them and they come to investigate what I've found. The strawberry was still sitting there when I left to tend the garden. I came back in to see the chickens about 2 hours later and nothing there. If I really want to get their attention I put a meal worm on whatever I want them to see and that seems to do the trick.

My 4 girls are meat and potatoes/rice/pasta girls. The only green things they seem to like are grass and chickweed. No fruits either. They won't eat earthworms either. Flying insects they like, thrill of the chase I guess.

Ouuu they love their mealworms!! I'll try that next time I give them some treats. :D

Well, "white" orpington is now seperated from everyone else so we can grow him out a bit. Soon we'll see if we have it in us to get a batch of meat birds in the future.
