This is my first time ever raising chickens. I started out with a prefab coop with the intention of ONLY having my three original chicks. However, I started dreaming of ways to make a real coop happen in my backyard. Eventually, I ended up with the coop below and now have a total of nine birds - two roosters and seven hens.
Earlier today I noticed my oldest hen wasn't out with the rest of the flock. So I checked around for her and noticed she was in the nest box acting weird. She sat in a box and collected the feathers around her to place underneath her body. Strange behavior so I knew she was up to something. From my research, this was what hens do when they go broody but she hasn't laid eggs yet so that couldn't be.
Came home later to find a small light brown egg and I was delighted.
