First time Chicken "farmer"

Hi, I'm Brenda. I live in Bellevue, WA and have eight 6 week old chickens. So far we are having a lot of fun with them. Love just watching them root around.
We moved them to the coop about a week ago, with limited outside privileges (when it is warm). This is all new or us and wondering when they will be able to go in and out of their coop on their own. The coop stands about four feet off the ground and has a ramp.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! What does your ramp look like, how steep is it, does it have good footing? It does take birds a few days to get used to new things, but six week old chicks should be able to get up a ramp by themselves if it is not too difficult. You might try putting treats/ scratch on the ramp to make them want to go up and down it.
 
My ramp is fairly steep but ha the wooden little steps on it.

Glad you could join the flock! Great tip there for you from Kelsie on putting treats on the ramps, chicks are generally driven by food. I too agree at six weeks they should be able to manage the ramp. I put chicks out at that age and they can manage this ramp

I just added a little gripper tape between the wooden steps and they got on great.

Brenda, nice to meet you. My son lives in Bellevue, and I'm still trying to spell the name right . He says the weather has been pretty good.

What breeds do you have? Bantams might have trouble with your ramp but, regular sized chickens should be able to handle the ramp or fly partway up.
 
I bought the gripper tape and four of the 8 have figured how to go up. The two friendliest want to be picked up and brought out and in. They will learn.'
