I did a chicken keeping course about 10 years ago but either was talked out of or 'chickened' out of actively getting on with having chickens. My friend hatched 3 Porcelain bantam hens which needed rehoming so I took the plunge and said I would have them (I have a 4 year old grandson who is animal mad). Spent hours researching coops, runs, sourcing equipment, feeds etc (found this site in the process), building coop/run, securing garden to free range and then very nervously took delivery of the three baby bantams. I felt physically sick the first night worried if they would still be alive in the morning. No worries, in the morning when I opened coop door they rushed out straight to their food, drinking from a (new to them) water nipple, pottering around quite happily. After 4 days I am smitten, it gets me up early to let them out, I can sit watching them for ages, they all have different personalities and they are clever, very quick to work things out.

Welcome to BYC! Chickens are great to watch and it is amazing how different they are from each other. I love watching mine and am glad you have found enjoyment in yours too! What are yours named?

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join us here! It's great to hear things are working out for you with your new birds. It seems now you are glad you got them and I'm sure your grandson will really enjoy keeping them with you. It sure is a hobby the whole family can enjoy.

Good luck for the future and be sure to ask any questions. Everyone here to help you along the way :frow

My 4year old grandson named them 'Baby', she is smaller than the others and we think not a pure bred Porcelain but is definitely the leader of the pack. Then we have 'Cuddles' and 'Syrup'. Yes, we all wondered about the name 'Syrup'! Hasten to say I call them my girls.

Thank you. It is reassuring to know there are fellow chicken keepers to offer their expertise and help.

Nice to meet you Fran. How wonderful you got well socialized birds that are a joy to have around. Often when' friends' gift another(actually dumping) they get roosters. You have a true friend. Would love to see photos of your flock.

Welcome aboard! :frow
We are glad you joined our flock.
