I did a chicken keeping course about 10 years ago but either was talked out of or 'chickened' out of actively getting on with having chickens. My friend hatched 3 Porcelain bantam hens which needed rehoming so I took the plunge and said I would have them (I have a 4 year old grandson who is animal mad). Spent hours researching coops, runs, sourcing equipment, feeds etc (found this site in the process), building coop/run, securing garden to free range and then very nervously took delivery of the three baby bantams. I felt physically sick the first night worried if they would still be alive in the morning. No worries, in the morning when I opened coop door they rushed out straight to their food, drinking from a (new to them) water nipple, pottering around quite happily. After 4 days I am smitten, it gets me up early to let them out, I can sit watching them for ages, they all have different personalities and they are clever, very quick to work things out.
